Potential of Macrophytes for Wastewater Remediation with Constructed Floating Wetlands in Cold Climates

چکیده
Nature-based, low technology wastewater treatment systems can benefit small and remote communities. Adding a constructed floating wetland (CFW) to waste stabilization ponds enhance efficacy at cost, depending on appropriate macrophytes. In cold climates, harsh growing conditions may limit CFW success, requiring research under-ambient field conditions. Seven native macrophytes were assessed for the growth, biomass production, root shoot uptake of potential contaminants concern from municipal in facultative pond Alberta, Canada. All established. Scirpus microcarpus had high nitrogen phosphorus roots shoots phytoextraction potential. Metal trace elements highest Glyceria grandis, Beckmannia syzigachne, microcarpus, mostly greater than shoots, indicating phytostabilization. Tissue contaminant concentrations did not always indicate accumulation CFW. Total per unit area was greatest although chromium molybdenum syzigachne Carex aquatilis, respectively. have phytoremediation if is increased. Species variability biomass; unpredictable climates wastewaters with suites contaminants, different water are recommended.

Pathogen Removal by Agricultural Constructed Wetlands in Cold Climates
Constructed treatment wetlands have been found to remove fecal coliform (FC) through a variety of mechanisms. This research evaluated the removal of FC in both warm and cold seasons from surface flow treatment wetlands in Bible Hill, Nova Scotia. Two wetlands (100 m), of differing depths were monitored over a 17 month period. The wetlands were loaded with dairy wastewater (average inlet FC conc...
متن کاملRemediation in Constructed Wetlands
Constructed wetlands are in use to improve the quality of contaminated groundwaters at many sites in the USA. Target contaminants include both organic and inorganic constituents. Volatile and nonvolatile hydrocarbons are found in ground water at closed petroleum refinery sites, and in leachates from landfills. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are pollutants at many sites. Chlorinated organics o...
متن کاملCarbon Sequestration Potential of Constructed Wetlands Used for Wastewater Treatment
Wetlands present an important opportunity for carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas offsets by virtue of their potential for restoration using known and innovative land management methods, because inherently they are highly productive and accumulate large below-ground stocks of organic carbon. Wetlands are major carbon sinks. While vegetation traps atmospheric CO2 in wetlands and other ecosys...
متن کاملApplications of Constructed Wetlands for Wastewater Treatment
During the past decades, the high cost of conventional treatment processes has produced much economic pressure and they are not as natural methods as we expected. Thus, engineers begin to search for some creative, cost effective, and environmentally sound ways to treat wastewaters. Constructed wetland is a man made system which provides us many benefits and it is a very attractive way for many ...
